Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College's Makayla Carver drove in three runs in game two of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader with Methodist University with Guilford claiming the win, 8-2. Christine Bowman's three-run home run put Methodist ahead late in game one on the way to win the first contest, 8-7.
Two hits and an error in the bottom of first inning of game two put the Quakers on the board as the Quakers loaded the bases to start the contest. The Quakers continued the rally one inning later, amassing five hits in a four-run rally, all scored with one out. The Quakers countered a two-run Methodist rally in the top of the fourth inning with a run in the bottom half of the inning on Carver's second RBI of the game. Carver's double plated an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as she followed a Caroline Barnette double with a RBI-single with one out.
Both sides traded a run apiece in the first inning as errors on each side contributed to the first run for both teams. The Quakers (22-12) rallied with two outs in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back doubles to produce a two-run rally. The Quakers increased their lead to four as Guilford produced three hits in the next inning as part of a two-run rally. Methodist (9-31) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth frame when when Kristen Bailly connected on a grand slam to center field to tie the game. Bowman helped her own cause in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run home run after two walks to claim the lead and cap a rally of seven unanswered runs. The Quakers rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs to produce two runs. The Quakers kept the bases loaded with two outs before Methodist retired Guilford to secure the win.
Carver finished the doubleheader four-for-eight, hitting four-for-four in game two and totaling five RBI throughout the afternoon. Katy Holt produced a four-for-four effort in game one with one RBI and a double while Barnette finished the afternoon four-for-eight with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Bowman finished game one two-for-four to lead Methodist in game one while Danielle Brendes was the lone Monarchs bat in game two with a multi-hit effort, batting two-for-four.
Courtney Lackey (8-3) claimed the game one loss in a six-inning effort where she struck out six and walked seven before being relieved by Rebekah Langston with no outs in the seventh inning. Casey Snead (4-3) took the game two complete-game win, stirking out two and walking five.
Christine Bowman (3-5) took the game one complete-game win for Methodist, striking out two and walking six. Hannah Key (0-2) took the game two loss in a two-inning effort where she gave up six runs. Heidi Foreman finished the contest, walking one batter.
The Quakers return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday, traveling to Randolph-Macon College for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
