Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Guilford College dealt previously unbeaten Virginia Wesleyan its first loss and extended its school-record winning streak to 10 games by splitting an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday. The Quakers (15-2, 2-1 ODAC) won the opener, 2-0, but the Marlins (15-2, 4-1 ODAC) claimed the nightcap, 7-2.
Virginia Wesleyan is ranked eighth in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Poll and Guilford's highest ranked victim since a 7-6 win over seventh-ranked Emory University Feb. 18, 2012.
Guilford sophomore Maggie Shaffer (7-1) scattered six hits in a complete-game shutout win in the opener. She relied on her flawless defense as Guilford made no errors. Shaffer yielded a walk and struck out one. The Marlins' biggest threat came in the fourth inning when they put runners at second and third with one out, but could not score a run. Kayla Dost had two hits for the Marllins.
Marty Wilcox's run-scoring ground out scored Cynthia Hayes with the game's first run in the top of the third. Taylor Boyd reached on a fielding error, which scored Laura Hall for the Quakers' second run. Guilford managed only three hits against Marlins' pitcher Kristina Karagiorgis (7-1).
Virginia Wesleyan broke open a 1-0 game in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs off of Guilford starter Casey Snead (4-1) and reliever Rebekah Langston. Lindsey Inzana (2-3, 3 RBI), whose fielder's choice in the fourth scored the first run, delivered a two-run single in the fifth. Karagiorgis and Courtney Bogan added run-scoring hits in the inning. Last year's ODAC Pitcher of the Year Mackenzie Creech (8-0) kept Guilford off the scoreboard until the Quakers scored two unearned runs in the sixth.
Rachel Howard's single scored the two runs and also chased Creech in favor of Mary Shipp, who picked up a save with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Guilford's Cynthia Hayes had one of Guilford's four hits, which extended her school-record hitting streak to 24 games.
