Second-half Comeback Propels Quakers Past Wasps

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C.---A Guilford College own goal in the 87th minute capped the Quakers' comeback bid, coming back from a two-goal deficit to earn a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Emory & Henry College, 3-2.

Emory & Henry's Bethany Myer played of a deflection inside the box in the third minute to take an early lead.  After taking the lead, 1-0, at halftime, the Wasps struck again in the 53rd minute when Sam Sampson played a ball off her own deflection to increase the lead, 2-0.

The Quakers responded when Cassie Vaughn sent a right-side cross to Morgan Henderson inside the box to put Guilford on the board in the 59th minute.  Guilford strung together its second goal in 3:54 when Becca Valchar fed a pass up the middle to Nicki Baggett to tie the score.  In 86th minute, Guilford forced a corner kick that flew into the left side of the six yard box, forcing a mad scramble in front of the net.  A deflection from a Wasp defender just barely crossed the goal line, giving the Quakers the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute.

Emory & Henry outshot Guilford 8-5 while the Quakers held the edge on corner kicks, 4-2.

Caitlyn Young made three saves in net for the Quakers.  Emory & Henry's Vicki Fenley stopped one shot.

The Quakers return to action Saturday, traveling to Virginia Wesleyan College for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
