Women’s Soccer Surpassed By Bridgewater

Quakers cannot slow Eagles attack on rainy Saturday evening

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Under the rain and lights of Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center, the Guilford College women's soccer team (2-7-2, 1-5-0 ODAC) was blanked by Bridgewater College (9-1-2, 4-0-2 ODAC), 5-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Saturday night.

The Eagles controlled the game from wire-to-wire, out-shooting the Quakers 24-1 overall and 15-1 on-target. The guests committed more fouls, 6-0, and received more corner kicks, 7-0, really taking advantage of those opportunities.

Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) had her worst night in frame of her career, although she was peppered consistently by the Bridgewater attack. Making nine saves she yielded five goals over the 23 total shots she faced, falling to 2-6-3. Zoey Gillen (Holly Springs, N.C.) relieved her late and made a save in her collegiate debut. Erinn Lockard and Taylor Stiegler combined for the clean sheet for the guests, with Lockard getting the start, making the lone necessary save, and receiving the win, to improve to 6-1-2.

Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) fired the lone Guilford shot of the night.

BC's offense was in high gear, meanwhile, with Laney Fayard on the receiving end of two of Brianna Curro's three assists, with Fayard's first tally finishing as the game-winner. Lily Hewatt also had an assist while Grace Monton, Sophia Phillips, and Laura Narby all scored goals for the guests.

Bridgewater opened the scoring in the seventh minute off their first corner of the night. Curro's distribution could not have been placed much better from the left corner, as it found Fayard on the weak side, getting headed in into the top middle for the matches' first goal and Fayard's second of the year.

Insurance came in the 21st minute when Hewatt drove deep into Guilford territory, turning the corner before reaching the end line and sending a pass into the box and into the feet of Phillips. She had an easy redirect into the bottom-right of the net for her fifth tally of the year.

BC's ensuing goal came in the 24th minute mirroring their first tally. Once again on a corner kick from the left side, Curro connected with Fayard, placed a little further this this time off the weak side post. The easy header for Fayard netted the guest's third goal on her third tally of the fall.

Wrapping the first half scoring, Guilford effectively defended a Bridgewater corner, this time from the right corner, but the loose ball went back to a similar spot by the angle for a second chance at a feed into the box. It found Minton, whose first try clanged off the crossbar, but ricocheted down to her feet on a follow, tapping it in for her first goal from point-blank range.

The Eagles called off the dogs a bit in the second half, but did add one more in the 67th minute. Curro chased down a well-executed pass through the middle of the pitch before driving to beyond the left post. She stopped on a dime to lose her defender, then feed Narby who got to step into one right in front from the top of the 8', shooting into the top-left intersection for her eighth goal and bringing the score to the final of 5-0.

Guilford heads to Randolph-Macon College next Saturday, October 17, battling the Yellow Jackets beginning at 4:00 PM.
