Lynchburg Surpasses Women’s Soccer in Road Finale

Quakers eliminated from postseason contention with defeat

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Guilford College women's soccer team (2-9-2, 1-7-0 ODAC) was defeated by the University of Lynchburg (13-2-1, 7-1 ODAC), 5-0, and eliminated from Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament contention on Wednesday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The Guilford offense was unable to generate a steady presence as the Hornets maintained an advantage in total shots, 43-2 and shots on goal, 18-2. Additionally, the hosts drew all-14 corner kicks in the match.

Once again, Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) was simply peppered with shots from the opposition, making seven saves in the match, but allowed two goals in a pretty stout 59 minutes in net, nonetheless falling to 2-8-2. Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) took over from there, allowing three goals against six saves through the final 31 minutes. Julia Salo was not frequently contested on the day, but made the two saves necessary to preserve the clean sheet through the opening 53 minutes of play, improving to 11-2-1 with the result. Kylie Cass finished off the shutout but did not face a shot in the closing 37 minutes of action.

Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) and Keeli Crisco (Albemarle, N.C.) each got shots on goal for GC during the games' proceedings.

Kate Hillegas scored her first game-winning goal of the fall for Lynchburg before netting a second tally later on. Leigha Gronau, Ally Hopkins, and Sejal Wellington also contributed on the scoresheet for the hosts while Makayla Hargrove, Ava Olson, Hannah Phillips added helpers.

The Quaker defense held firm for nearly the entirety of the opening half of action, but the hosts would open the scoring in the final minute of the stanza, taking advantage of a Guilford mistake. After collecting a ball that was just chipped in deep, Motto rolled the ball to Berry in the box to prompt a build up. Unfortunately, the senior took too much time to trigger the offense with Hillegas pressuring and jabbing her left foot in front of a pass attempt, and effectively so, as the ball floated into the vacated goal for her second tally of the season in the 45th minute.

Into the second half, Motto continued to make plays for Guilford, including deterring consecutive quick shot attempts from point-blank range off a Hornet corner kick, but the score would not stand. Building through the center of the pitch, Hargrove got the ball at a good spot to distribute from at the top of the 18' straight-away, serving as the pivot on a give-and-go by Gronau off the right post. She shot cross-crease, tucking it into the corner for her seventh goal of the year in the 50th.

Lynchburg pilled on two more in the 66th minute. First, Olson found Hopkins in transition, with the latter popping a shot from range on the left-wing for her second goal of the year. Shortly after the Hornets possessed the ball after the GC kickoff and the ball found the feet of Hillegas in the box on the left wing, and she fired across the crease to net her second tally of the game and third of the fall.

In the 76th, Wellington got a Phillips feed around the PK stripe and scored her third goal of the year, finalizing the score at 5-0.

At home the rest of the way, Guilford hosts Shenandoah University on Saturday, October 24, kicking off at 1:00 PM at the App.
