Guilford and N.C. Wesleyan Split Wednesday Twinbill

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.---Guilford College and North Carolina Wesleyan College split a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with the Quakers taking the first game, 6-3, while the Battling Bishops came back to claim the nightcap, 4-0.

The Quakers scored runs in five of seven innings in the first game.  Sarah Cutright went two-for-four with the game's first RBI in the top of the first off a RBI double to right field.  Emily VanHaneghan knocked home the first of her two RBI in the second inning off a single.  After N.C. Wesleyan took a 3-2 lead through three innings of play, Allie Nicholson brought in two runs on a single to right center to regain the lead.  VanHaneghan doubled to center field in the sixth inning for her second RBI of the day.  Rachel Howard provided further insurance to the lead in the seventh with a RBI single to center field.

Casey Snead (2-1) threw a complete game, striking out seven batters and giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

N.C. Wesleyan's Kendra Hoes led the Battling Bishops in game two, going one-for-three with two RBI on a double to center field in the bottom of the fifth.  Carla Matthews drove in a run on a walk in the bottom of the third inning.

Morgan Myers (2-3) threw two and a third innings, striking out three and surrendering just one hit. Maggie Shaffer relieved Myers for the final three and a two thirds innings, striking out four and surrendering two hits.

The Battling Bishops' Leanna Fann (4-5) threw a complete-game shutout, giving up six hits in seven innings.

Cynthia Hayes finished the twinbill five-of-seven, maintaining her NCAA Division III lead in batting average at .568.

The Quakers return to action next Wednesday, hosting Salem College at 3 p.m. inside Haworth Field.
