Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greg Carnovale scored in the 84th minute to give Guilford College a 2-1 soccer win over visiting Berry College Sunday afternoon.
The Quakers (2-1-1) played a ball into Berry's defensive zone, which Vikings goalie Kevin Madigan approached along with Guilford's Ronnie Castellanos. The two players collided and the ball squirted loose to the trailing Carnovale, who slotted it into the empty net for the game-winner.
Carnovale's score capped a Guilford comeback from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Freddy Gomez netted his team-leading third goal of the season in the 51st minute when he chipped a forward pass from Castellanos off the outside of his right foot over Madigan.
Berry's David Shaw came off the bench in the first half to open the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 36th minute.
Guilford goalie Peter Truitt made four saves, including a pair of point-blank deflections off of excellent Berry chances. The Vikings' Zak Wallinford lifted a ball over Truitt in the game's final minute, but Quakers' defender Griffen Gilbert preserved the win by clearing Wallingford's shot from the back line.
The Vikings (2-1) outshot the Quakers, 16-12, and amassed 18 of the game's 27 fouls. Madigan finished with three saves.
Guilford opens a four-game road trip Tuesday (9/14) at Emory & Henry College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
