Guilford Drops Two at Eastern Mennonite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Jessica Sullivan's two-out, two-run single in the eighth gave Eastern Mennonite University a 6-5 win and a sweep of its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader with Guilford College Saturday.

The comeback victory capped the Royals' (11-7, 4-0 ODAC) doubleheader sweep and extended their winning streak to a season-best six games. Guilford, which dropped the opener, 8-2, fell to 13-9 (1-5 ODAC) with its fourth straight setback.

Morgan Andrews' two-run single highlighted Guilford's four-run third inning that opened a 4-1 Quakers' lead in the nightcap. Eastern Mennonite tied the game in the fifth on Courtney Allman's two-out, two-run homer.

Guilford, which left 12 runners on base, took a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning on Ami Hutcherson's RBI double. The Royals countered later in the inning on Sullivan's second hit of the game, a single to center that scored winning pitcher Lisa Lee (8-4) from second and Allman from first.

Hutcherson and Andrews both went 4-four-4 in the contest and Kimberly Keys had two hits for Guilford. Jessica Burcham (7-3) went the distance and struck out seven.

Allman and Sullivan paced Eastern Mennonite's offense with two hits and two RBI apiece. Lee (8-4) earned her second win of the day with 5.1 innings of relief. She allowed 10 hits, but just one unearned run.

After Keys' (2-3, RBI) plated an unearned run in the sixth to tie the opener at 2-2, Eastern Mennonite scored six runs in the bottom of the inning. The Royals sent 10 batters to the plate and had five hits in the frame, including Jessica Blosser's two-run double.

Sullivan, one of five Royals with two hits, went 3-for-3. Teammate Molly Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lee fanned six and walked one in a complete-game four-hitter.

Guilford visits league-rival Bridgewater College Sunday (3/20) for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
