Softball Splits Season Finale with Lynchburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. (4/18/10) -- The Guilford College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon with host Lynchburg College, dropping the first game, 4-3, but taking the nightcap, 8-2.

The Hornets (22-14, 12-6 ODAC) took a 3-0 lead in the opener after two frames, but the Quakers (28-11-1/13-5) scored single runs in the third and fourth to close the gap. Guilford scored the tying run in the top of the seventh on a Morgan Andrews. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the inning on pitcher Katie Bruce's walkoff double to left center.

Bruce scattered seven hits and walked none while striking out six Quakers to earn the win in the circle. Lauren Duguay hit a two-run home run in the second inning, and Sarah Smith and Taylor Walker both had two hits. Julie Langseth hit her school-record 10th homer of the season for the Quakers.

Guilford took an early in the second contest, scoring five in the first inning.  Andrews' three-run double was the big blast in the inning. Guilford added single runs in the second and third innings to take a 7-0 lead, but Rachel Gallagher belted a two-run home run in the fourth to get the Hornets on the board. The Quakers scored again in the fifth and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh unscathed.

Lynchburg's Jenny Carroll was 3-3 in the second game and Ashely Hohenberger was 2-4. Kimberly Keys had three hits for the Quakers. Jessica Burcham improved to 10-5 with the complete-game win that included eight strikeouts.

The Quakers return to action Friday in the ODAC Championship Tournament in Salem, Va. The eight-team, double-elimination tourney runs through Sunday. Matchups and game times will be announced later in the week.
