Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/8/10) -- Guilford College's softball team swept visiting Swarthmore College Monday, winning 13-2 in five innings and 14-6 in six innings.
The wins extends the Quakers' best start in school history and improves their record to 10-3-1. The Garnet falls to 2-2 as it opens its spring-break trip to North Carolina.
Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead in the opener on Kathryn Riley's RBI double, but the Quakers answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. Morgan Andrews' two-run double highlighted Guilford's six-run fourth inning and Julie Langseth ended the game with a grand-slam in the fifth.
Langseth finished the game with two hits and five RBIs. Courtney Kozar went 3-4 with two RBI for Guilford. Emily Willis (2-1) earned the five-inning victory, despite yielding five walks. Riley, who threw a no-hitter in the Garnet's season opener last week, took the loss. Danielle Seltzer was 1-3 with an RBI.
In game two, the teams combined for six errors, which led to eight unearned runs in the game. The pitchers also combined for 15 walks and six wild pitches in the six-inning contest. The Quakers grabbed a 4-1 lead in the third inning, but Swarthmore scored four unearned runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 edge. Elizabeth Cushing delivered a three-run double in the frame.
Guilford answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, three of which scored off of Kimberly Keys' three-run double. The teams traded runs in the fifth, before Guilford ended the game with four unearned runs in the sixth. A two-run double by Keys' ended the game and gave her five RBIs for the afternoon.
Keys and teammate Charissa Duncan both had three hits for Guilford. Autumn Yoder and Brandi Ingram both added two hits and two RBI, which helped make a winner out of Tabitha Poole (2-0).
Cushing was 2-4 with three RBI and Seltzer also added two hits for Swarthmore.
Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Thursday (3/11) against visiting Bridgewater College at 2:30 p.m.
