Softball Falters Twice In Comeback Bids to Pfeiffer

Three homers, 22 hits, failed to propel Quakers offensively

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College softball team (10-11-1, 0-2 ODAC) kicked off a long homestand, concluding their non-conference slate against Pfeiffer University (16-8, 1-1 USA South) in a struggle to maintain ground after leading by five in game one before falling 7-5 to the Falcons and experiencing the same fate, 11-8 in game two after being down by six heading into the seventh on Tuesday evening at Haworth Field.

Abbey Whelan (Gaithersburg, Md.) drew the start for Guilford, maintaining her footing up until midway in the clash, only tossing 4.2 innings, surrendering six earned runs, on seven hits, two walks, striking out two for the loss to fall to 4-4 overall. Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) entered in relief for the Quakers, pitching a solid 2.1 innings, only dropping one earned run on two hits, while striking out one batter.

Mollie Bulla started in the circle for Pfeiffer, creating many mistakes in 4.0 innings of work, giving up five earned runs on seven hits, two walks, striking out one, before earning the victory to advance to 8-4 on the year. Abigail Bowman closed things out for the Falcons in 3.0 innings of shutout ball, only walking one while punching out four for her second save on the season.

Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) reached on base in a 1-for-1 effort, batting in three while scoring a run with two walks and a home run in the process. Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) launched a homer of her own in a 1-for-3 performance with one run and two RBIs. Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) created many scoring opportunities, slashing 2-for-3 with one run and two doubles.

Landry Stewart was the top performer for the Falcons, bashing a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with one run, one walk, and two stolen bases. Mollie Bulla launched a home run in a 2-for-3 effort, with one run and two runs batted in. Charly Cooper would follow suit with a 1-for-3 outing, with one run, two RBIs, and a home run.

Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) received the nod for Guilford in the circle, failing to keep Guilford in contention early in 2.2 innings, giving up eight runs, two earned, on five hits, one walk, striking out one for the loss to fall to 1-4 overall. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) did not fare much better in 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk. Emma Parnell (Troy, N.C.) closed things out for the Quakers, tossing 2.0 frames, only giving up one hit while striking out one in the process.

Abigail Bowman had a short stint starting in the circle for Pfeiffer, surrendering two earned runs off five hits, with one strikeout in 2.0 innings of work. Reese Caranna kept the Falcons in control, only dropping three earned runs, off eight hits, one walk, striking out one for the victory to advance to 4-0 on the season. Peyton Lane faltered in the Quakers' comeback in 0.2 innings of work, dropping three earned runs on two hits and two walks. However, Mollie Bulla sealed the deal for her second save of the year, tossing 0.1 innings.

Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) held strong, launching her most hits in her Guilford career, batting 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) had a solid showing, slashing 2-for-4 with one run, two RBIs, and one home run. Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) continued her production at the dish, recording 2-for-4 with one run, two RBIs, and one triple.

Kristyn Herman ranked ahead of the Falcons performers at the plate, bashing 2-for-4 with one run, three RBIs, and one home run. E.A. Nance was flawless at the dish, swinging 3-for-3 with one run, three RBIs, and two doubles. Charly Cooper added on to the Falcons' production, batting 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and one double.

GAME 1
Guilford would begin scoring early with a three-run home run by Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) in the first. Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) added on to the Quakers' sizzling contributions at the plate with a two-run home run of her own to extend the Quakers lead, 5-0 through four innings.

Pitching woes would ensue in the fifth for Guilford, as Charly Cooper and Mollie Bulla each launched homers for the Falcons as they took the lead for the first time in the opening contest, 7-5. No more scoring would occur as Abigail Bowman closed things out for the Falcons, taking control of game one in a 7-5 decision.

GAME 2
Kristyn Herman would cash in early for Pfeiffer with a home run into left, before Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) would match Herman with a homer of her own to tie the clash at two runs apiece. Guilford would add one more run with a Kaylee Harris (Mooresville, N.C.) RBI single to extend the Quakers' lead 3-2 through two innings.

Throughout the battle, five errors would ensue for Guilford, allowing Pfeiffer to add six more runs to the box score, creating a significant hole for the Quakers. Two wild pitches by Pfeiffer accumulated in the seventh, scoring Harris and Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) after Goyings contributed to Guilford's total with an RBI single. Unfortunately, Guilford would fall short of a walk-off comeback bid against the Falcons in an 11-8 decision in game two.

Guilford jumps back into conference action, clashing against the Eagles of Bridgewater College on Saturday, March 28th, at Haworth Field. The first pitch of the opener is set for 1:00 PM, with the rubber match at 3:00 PM.
