Softball Wins and Ties in Season Opener Against Greensboro

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/17/10) -- Guilford College opened the 2010 softball season with a win and a tie versus crosstown-rival Greensboro College Wednesday afternoon on a frigid Haworth Field. The Quakers (1-0-1) took the opener, 5-4. The second game was suspended after seven innings due to darkness with the score tied at 3-3.

Julie Langseth's two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Guilford to the opening-game win. The Pride grabbed a 3-0 lead on Brittany Teer's two-run blast in the top of the third inning and pitcher Hannah Pennell made the lead stand by holding the Quakers without a hit for the first four innings.

Guilford got on the board in the fifth with two runs and tied the game an inning later when Autumn Yoder plated an unearned run with a two-out, bases-loaded walk. Greensboro regained a 4-3 lead on pinch-hitter's Kim Blust sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Langseth finished with two hits and two RBI for the Quakers. Teammate Ami Hutcherson also had two hits. Jessica Burcham (1-0) fanned seven in a complete-game win.

Brittany Parsons had three hits in the opener and drilled a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap. Megan Oberender's RBI double in the third gave Greensboro a 3-1 lead.

Guilford rallied again, this time in the fourth inning on run-scoring hits by Krystal Page and pinch-hitter Sarah Cutright. Greensboro center-fielder Cyndel Henson threw out Cutright trying to score from second on Brandi Ingram's hit later in the inning, preserving the tie.

Burcham, who entered the second game in the top of the fifth, and Greensboro's Brittany Evans kept their opponents scoreless for the rest of the game. With the sun and visibility low, the game was called after seven innings.

Parsons has three hits and two RBI for Greensboro in the second game. Rebecca Pink also had three hits and Kim Blust added two. Morgan Andrews, Page and Hutcherson all had two hits for Guilford.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (2/20) versus Methodist University at 1:00 p.m.
