Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (1/3/10) - Dezzire Gilliard's basket with three seconds left in regulation lifted Methodist University to a 49-48 victory over visiting Guilford College Sunday in a nonconference basketball game. Gilliard scored a game-high 16 points in both teams' first contest since early December.
The Quakers (5-4) erased a seven-point deficit with 3:59 left in the game and went ahead 48-47 on two Alexa Williams free throws with 25 seconds remaining.
Gilliard missed a shot with eight seconds left, but the Monarchs' retained possession. After a Methodist timeout, Gilliard took a feed from Michaela Myers and scored the game-winner in the paint with three seconds left.
The game-winner marked Gilliard's second field goal of the game and her only basket of the second half. She connected on 12-of-18 free throws and scored 10 points in the second half. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to share game-high rebounding honors with teammate Dawn Sanderson. Sanderson also scored 10 points as both players recorded double-doubles.
Lauren LeFevers paced the Quakers' offense with eight points off the bench.
Guilford, which had a three-game winning streak snapped, returns to action Tuesday (1/5) against visiting Hollins University at 7:00 p.m.
