Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. (4/8/09) - Guilford College matched its school record for wins in a season by sweeping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader at Randolph College Wednesday. Quakers' senior Kelly Hale was three-for-four with a homer and two RBI in the Quakers' (20-10, 8-4 ODAC) 11-3 opening-game win in six innings. Guilford rookie Morgan Andrews went three-for-four with three RBI, all career highs, in Guilford's 8-1 win in the nightcap.
Guilford's 20 wins match the total of the 2008 team. The Quakers have won nine of their last 10 games and 18 of the last 22.
A six-run second inning sparked Guilford in the first game. Hale had an RBI double in the frame, while Kelly Guarnieri and Amber Stapler both added RBI singles. Guilford took advantage of two Wildcats' errors and a passed ball in the frame. Randolph's Teresa Dalton had an RBI double to make it a 6-1 game in the fourth inning, but Guilford scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to put the game away. Hale led off the fifth inning with her team-leading fourth homer of the season. Teammate Julie Langseth, who went two-for-three, hit her school-record fourth triple of the season, which scored a sixth-inning run. Senior Taryn Pulvermuller (4-1) scattered five hits over six innings for the complete-game pitching win.
Two Randolph (17-11, 7-9 ODAC) errors led to two unearned Guilford runs in the second inning of game two, which was all the offense pitchers Jessica Burcham and Samantha Golley needed. Burcham improved to 8-4 with four innings of two-hit ball that included six strikeouts. Golley notched her first save of 2009 by striking out five over the last three innings. The Quakers recorded 11 strikeouts in the game and set the team season record for strikeouts in a season (196).
Lindsay Cross' bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning made it a 4-1 game before Andrews broke the game open with a three-run triple in the top of the sixth.
Guilford's Kimberly Keys and Ami Hutcherson also had three hits in the win.
Guilford hosts Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (4/11) in an ODAC twinbill at 2:00 p.m. Randolph visits league-rival Randolph-Macon College Thursday (4/9) for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
