Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/5/09) - Kelly Hale's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Guilford College a 5-4 comeback win over Lynchburg College Sunday. The victory gained a split of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader after the Hornets won the opener, 8-3, behind Lauren Duguay's three hits and two RBI.
Lynchburg (20-5, 11-1 ODAC) is ranked 23rd in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches' Association Division III Coaches' Poll and saw its 15-game winning streak come to an end.
The Hornets broke open a 1-1 game in the day's second contest with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Taylor Walker's popup to shallow right field scored pinch-runner Kelly Self from third for a 2-1 Lynchburg lead. Ashley Hohenberger and Audra Della Rosa added RBI singles later in the frame to give the guests a 4-1 edge.
The Quakers (18-10, 6-4 ODAC) answered in the home sixth as Julie Langseth led off the inning with her team-leading third homer of the season. Guilford tied the score when Lynchburg outfielder Leslie Bailey misplayed an Amber Stapler two-out single that allowed two runs to score.
Guilford's Jessica Burcham (7-4) retired the side in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Quakers loaded the bases against reliever Barbara Miles (8-4) with lead-off singles by Ami Hutcherson and Kimberly Keys followed by a walk to Langseth. Hale, the Quakers' career RBI leader, singled to left to end the game.
Hale, Langseth and Keys paced the Quakers' 10-hit effort with two hits apiece. Burcham struck out seven for her team-leading seventh win of the season.
Brittany Allsop had two hits and a stolen base for Lynchburg. Walker was one-for-two with a solo homer and two RBI.
In the opener, Hohenberger's two-run double in the second spotted Lynchburg an early 2-0 lead. Hale's RBI single in the fourth made it a 3-2 game before the Hornets broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Duguay belted her fourth homer of the season in the sixth inning. Amber James went two-for-four with a double and RBI. Miles got the pitching decision with a complete-game effort. She fanned four and walked one.
Hale went two-for-three in the first game to lead the Quakers. Guilford committed two errors, which led to four unearned runs.
The Quakers are back in action Wednesday (4/8) at league-rival Randolph College. Lynchburg hosts Randolph-Macon College Wednesday in an ODAC twinbill.
