Quakers Fall to Va. Wesleyan, 6-5

SALEM, Va. (4/25/09) - Virginia Wesleyan College scored twice in the top of the eighth inning and hung on for a 6-5 win over Guilford College in an elimination game Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The fifth-seeded Marlins (27-16) advance to play Eastern Mennonite Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in another elimination contest. The third-seeded Quakers (26-13) end their year with school records for victories and league wins (13) in a season.

Virginia Wesleyan scored in the eighth inning on Katie Dunstan's one-out, RBI single that scored Brittaney Brown, who was placed on second base according to the tie-break rule. The Marlins added a needed insurance run later in the frame on Jackie Jarzynka's sacrifice fly to center.

Guilford's Morgan Andrews' two-out single to left scored pinch-runner Sarah Pedroncelli to make it a 6-5 game in the bottom of the eighth, but Brown (24-9) got Amber Stapler end the game on a popup to first base.

Dunstan had two of Virginia Wesleyan's six hits. Jarzynka was one for three with a double and two RBI. Brown worked around 10 hits and a walk to record her league-leading 24th win of the season.

Kelly Hale, one of three Quakers with two hits, hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season to give Guilford a 2-0 first-inning lead. She added a game-tying bunt single in the fifth to finish with three RBI. Guilford's Charissa Duncan and Kelly Guarnieri both had two hits in the game. Jessica Burcham (12-7) took the loss in relief. She struck out six in five innings and yielded four runs, one of which was earned.
