Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. (4/23/09) - Guilford College scored its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament victory in school history with a 4-1 win over Randolph College, but Bridgewater took a 5-1 win in Friday's second game to send the Quakers (26-12) into the lower bracket of the eight-team tourney.
Guilford pitcher Jessica Burcham yielded a first-inning run before retiring 19 of the game's final 20 batters to earn the opening-game win. She struck out the side in the seventh inning to finish with 10 strikeouts. Guilford took advantage of five Wildcats (19-14) errors as three of the Quakers' four runs were unearned. Kelly Guarnieri had two of Guilford's six hits and scored once. Ami Hutcherson's RBI single in the fifth tied the game and Courtney Kozar scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on a throwing error.
The win sent Guilford into a winner's bracket match with Bridgewater (33-7). Both teams scored single runs in the fifth and the score remained tied until Amber Hoffman delivered a pinch, two-run double in the fifth to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Caity Butler's two-run double in the sixth provided the game's final margin. Lindsay Lam worked around two Guilford hits in the sixth and seventh innings to save the decision for Becky Schmidt (8-2).
Julie Langseth was three-for-four with a run scored for Guilford. Burcham fanned seven in 5.1 innings, but yielded four walks and was touched for 11 hits and four earned runs.
Guilford meets Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game. Bridgewater plays top-seeded Lynchburg Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
