Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/11/09) – Brenae Pettit's two-run, two-out single in the seventh lifted visiting Virginia Wesleyan College to a 3-2 win at Guilford College Saturday in the second game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball doubleheader. The Quakers (21-11, 9-5 ODAC) won the opener, 2-1, on Taryn Pulvermuller's complete-game two hitter. The win marked Guilford's school-record 21st win of the season.
The Quakers scored twice in the first inning of the nightcap and made the runs stand as pitcher Jessica Burcham (8-5) kept the Marlins (21-13, 8-8 ODAC) scoreless through the first five innings. Virginia Wesleyan got on the board in the sixth inning when pitcher Brittany Brown doubled home Kristy White, who started the inning by reaching second on a two-base error by left fielder Kimberly Keys. Catcher Heather Bishop followed with a two-out single, but Guilford center fielder Kelly Guarnieri threw out pinch-runner Shannon Renigar at home to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Katie Dunstan reached on a one-out single before Burcham fanned Mandi Ryan for the inning's second out. Brittany Daniels reached base when Kelly Hale mishandled Ami Hutcherson's throw on a grounder to third. Dunstan took third on the play and White followed with a two-out walk that loaded the bases. Pettit hit a bloop single to shallow right field that scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs.
Guilford threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Jordan Sanford hit a one-out double and Hutcherson followed with a single to left. Brown retired Keys on a pop foul and fanned Julie Langseth to end the rally.
Brown worked around 10 Guilford hits and didn't allow a run in the final six innings for her 19th win of the season. She fanned three and did not walk a batter.
Burcham struck out 11 in her team-leading 10th complete game of the season, but walked three and yielded three runs, all unearned. Hutcherson was three-for-four with a double to pace the Quakers' offense.
In the opener, Pulvermuller (5-1) threw a complete-game two-hitter with four strikeouts. The Marlins took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first on Brown's sacrifice fly, but the Quakers tied the game in the second on Pulvermuller's two-out single to center that scored pinch-runner Shelby Bowser from second.
Guilford tallied the game-winning in the third on a fielder's choice by Langseth. Hutcherson led off the inning with a bunt single to Brown and took second on the pitcher's overthrow to first. Hutcherson took third on a groundout and scored just under Bishop's tag after Langseth's bunt to a charging Ryan at third.
The Marlins left two runners on in the fifth and sixth innings as Pulvermuller worked around two hits. She retired the side in the seventh for her fifth win of the season, which matches her career high.
Hutcherson had two of Guilford's seven hits and set the school record with her 10th stolen base of the year. Bishop and Dunstan had the Marlins' hits.
Guilford is back in action Sunday (4/19) against Randolph-Macon College at 2:00 p.m. The Marlins play Friday (4/17) against Sweet Briar College.
