Bridgewater Takes Two From Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (3/22/09) - Host Bridgewater College stayed perfect in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Sunday with two wins over league-rival Guilford College. The Eagles (17-1, 6-0 ODAC) took the opener, 11-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 6-1.

In game one, Bridgewater jumped on Guilford starter Samantha Golley (3-2) for four runs in the first inning. Mallory Sandridge plated Hillary Rees with a double and Caity Butler followed later in the inning with a one-out, three-run homer. Emily Morris' two-run homer capped a three-run second inning and sparked the hosts to an early 7-0 lead. Butler added an RBI single and Lauren Childress had a two-run double in the four-run fourth inning that effectively ended the game.

Butler went two-for-three with four RBI and two runs scored in the first game. Sandridge and Kaitlyn Bowman also had two hits in the Eagle's 10-hit performance. Ashley Gills limited Guilford to four hits and fanned three to improve to 6-0 this year.

The Eagles struck early in the nightcap off of Guilford starter Jessica Burcham (4-4) with three runs in the first and two in the second. Bowman and Butler both had a run-scoring single in both innings as Bridgewater had eight singles and a walk in their first 14 plate appearances.

Becky Schmidt kept Guilford's batters off balance through the first five innings before the Quakers scored their lone run of the day with an unearned tally in the sixth inning. Schmidt allowed just two hits and walked two in six innings to improve to 5-0.

Emily Willis replaced Burcham in the second inning and held Bridgewater to a run on three hits for 4.1 innings.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (3/28) versus visiting league-rival Sweet Briar College at 1:30 p.m.
