Softball Splits Nonconference Doubleheader With Averett

Danville, Va. (3/30/08) -- Guilford College split a nonconference doubleheader at Averett University Sunday afternoon. Guilford won the opener, 10-9, in nine innings. Averett rallied for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Guilford scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth to pull out the win. Winning pitcher DeNina Eldridge had an RBI hit in the ninth. Taryn Pulvermuller had a career-high four hits, including RBI singles in the first and second innings. JoBeth Hooker had two hits and an RBI for the Quakers.

Sara Lassiter's single in the seventh tied the score at 8-8. Hayley Brooks hit a two-run homer for the Cougars. Lassiter finished with a game-high three hits.

In game two, Averett scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to split the nonleague twinbill and end a 16-game losing skid. Emily New had an RBI double in the fifth inning and Hayley Brooks hit an RBI single in the seventh for Averett. Brooks finished with a game-high three hits, including a double. Erin Anderson and winning pitcher Sandra Dennison also had two hits.

Guilford's Diane Buccos hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning. She was one of eight different Quakers with hits on the day. Guilford left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

The Quakers are back in action Wednesday (4-2) against visiting Randolph College at 3:30 p.m.
