Guilford Sweeps ODAC Doubleheader With Emory & Henry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emory, Va. (3/26/08) -- Guilford College used the long ball Wednesday afternoon to capture a sweep of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Emory & Henry College Wednesday. Guilford held on for a 4-3 opening-game triumph and captured an 11-6 decision in the nightcap.

Kelly Hale homered twice and the Quakers blasted five homers over 14 innings. Guilford's three homers in the second game tied the school record. Hale hit a two-run shot in the Quakers' fourth inning that opened a 3-0 lead. The first homer of Charissa Duncan's career, a three-run shot, broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Quakers a 7-4 edge. Rookie Diane Buccos also left the yard for the first time in her career with a three-run blast in the seventh that highlighted the Quakers' four-run seventh inning. Duncan finished with three of the Quakers' six hits and three RBIs. Guilford took advantage of five Wasps' errors. Robin Phelps hit a pair of two-run homers for Emory & Henry.

Phelps' one-out single in the seventh of game one drew the hosts to within 4-3. Emory & Henry went on to lead the bases against Guilford's Samantha Golley (5-3), but the rookie fanned Laken Price for the second out of the inning before retiring Laura Hudson on a line drive to shortstop. Guilford scored all of its runs in the fourth inning thanks in part to a two-run homer by Kelly Guarnieri, followed by a solo shot by Hale. Amber Stapler and Morgan Freyer had two hits for the Quakers, while Phelps was four-for-four with two RBIs.

Guilford hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in another ODAC twinbill.
