Guilford Falls to Meredith, 1-0

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (10/10/08) - Anna Buryk's goal with three minutes left in regulation gave visiting Meredith College a 1-0 nonconference soccer win at Guilford College Friday afternoon.

Buryk ran unmarked down the left side of the field and onto a well-placed ball inside the 18-yard line by teammate Alex Calvert. Buryk ripped a shot from about 15 yards out past Guilford goalie Amber Stapler for the match's lone tally. The game-winner marked Buryk's third goal of the season.

Guilford (5-8) nearly tied the game moments later when Quakers' rookie Claire Massagee dribbled deep inside the Avenging Angels' zone and sent a crossing pass through the crease. The ball was deflected up and off the crossbar before Meredith (9-3) cleared it.

Calvert, Meredith's leading scorer, left the game early in the first half with an injury. In her absence, the teams played evenly, but when she returned to the lineup with 15 minutes remaining, she made her presence felt. Calvert received the ball near the top corner of the penalty area with her back to the goal and dropped a pass off to Buryk for her fourth assist of the season.

Guilford's Stapler made a game-high seven saves in goal. Meredith's Sarah Chadwick recorded her fourth shutout of the season with four saves. The Avenging Angels held a 16-15 edge in shots.

The Quakers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, return to action Oct. 15 against visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference-rival Randolph College at 4:00 p.m. The Angels, winners of three straight, visit Averett University Saturday (10/11) in a 2:00 p.m. USA South Athletic Conference contest.
