Roanoke Downs Guilford in Softball Doubleheader Action

Salem, Va. (4/2/07) --The Roanoke College softball team improved to 21-5 on the season with a double-header sweep of Guilford College on Monday in Salem, Va. The Maroons also improve to 8-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Roanoke won the first game 10-0 and followed with an 8-0 win in the second contest. The Quakers fall to 5-25, 1-11 in the ODAC.

In the second game, Roanoke senior Lyndsi Craig set a new Roanoke College record for career strikeouts. She finished the game with six to reach 329 for her career. She surpassed the old mark of 327 which was held by Amy Layman.

Roanoke 10, Guilford 0

Hillary Hudgins led off the bottom of the first reaching on a two-base fielding error. Two batters later she scored Roanoke's first run on a Tamara Poles single. Poles stole second and then scored on an Erin Ruitenberg single to center.

The Maroons added a third run on another Guilford error in the second. With Amber Walker at first, Kristen McCormick put down a bunt, but an overthrow to first allowed Walker score. After McCormick scored on a wild pitch, Poles got her second RBI of the game, a single to center to score Loren Messick. Kelsey Ruitenberg singled to left to make the score 6-0 in Roanoke's favor.

Roanoke 8, Guilford 0

The Maroons again got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Hudgins led off with an infield single and then stole second. She moved to third on a Messick groundout and scored on a Beth Nicholl single to center.

Kasey Austin drew a bases-loaded no-outs walk in the bottom of the second to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead. Hudgins followed with the same and the Maroon lead was 3-0. Messick hit a shallow single to center to score Jessica Zeman from third and give the Maroons a 4-0 lead. A Beth Nicholl sacrifice fly to center and two Guilford errors later and the Maroons owned a 7-0 lead.

Hudgins doubled to the gap in right field in the bottom of the fifth to score Jessica Zeman from first to end the game.
