Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C. (4/14/07) -- Junior Shannon Harris tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener and fanned three in the nightcap to win both games of visiting Emory & Henry College's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader sweep of Guilford College Saturday at Haworth Field. Harris fanned 10 in the first game, a 2-0 Wasps' win, and threw the last two frames of Emory & Henry's 5-4 eight-inning, game-two victory.
The Wasps (17-19, 9-7 ODAC) completed the sweep with a comeback victory in the nightcap. Guilford's (10-28, 3-13 ODAC) Charissa Duncan plated two with a double in a three-run sixth inning to give the hosts a short-lived 4-3 lead.
Junior Robin Phelps' two-out single in the top of the seventh scored pinch-runner Laken Price from second base and tied the game at 4-4. Harris entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and stranded Guilford runners at first and second base while working through the heart of the Quakers' order.
Junior Tiffany Caylor was placed on second base in the top of the Wasps' eighth and took third on senior Shannon Pharis' sacrifice bunt. She scored the winning unearned run when junior Meaghan Funk reached on Guilford's third error of the game.
Harris worked out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth by retiring freshman DeNina Eldridge on strikes and junior Zenovia Hogue on a popup with the tying run on third base.
Sophomore Dana Dettmar went 3-4 with her team-leading seventh homer of the year and a double. Phelps also had three hits and plated two in the nightcap. Guilford's Taryn Pulvermuller and Ciara Locklear had two hits apiece atop the Quakers' batting order.
Harris fanned the first five batters en route to a 2-0 opening-game win. Both teams had six hits, but the Wasps turned two double plays, which helped Harris strand six Guilford runners. Dettmar had a run-scoring single in the sixth inning. Hogue and sophomore Kelly Guarnieri had two hits apiece in the loss.
Guilford wraps up its season Sunday (4/15) against league-rival Lynchburg College at 2:00 p.m. Emory & Henry visits Sweet Briar College Sunday in an ODAC twinbill.
