Softball Drops Doubleheader to Bridgewater

Bridgewater, Va. (3/25/07) -- Bridgewater College ran its winning streak to six straight Sunday by sweeping Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball action. The Eagles won the opener, 7-0, and then took the second game, 25-0.

In the opener, Lisa Rhodes pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout to lead the Eagles. Rhodes struck out eight and did not walk a batter in her seven innings of work on the mound. She improved to 8-1 on the season.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jennifer Hall and Kate Reitz singled to open the inning and Kaitlyn Bowman reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. Laura Barry then cleared the sacks with a three-run double to give BC a 3-0 lead.

The score remained 3-0 until the fifth when the Eagles added three more runs. Bowman chased home two runs with a single and Caity Butler added a run-scoring double to make it 6-0.

Hall belted a solo homer in the sixth to complete the BC scoring.

The Eagles rolled to the 25-0 victory in the second game with a college-record 28 hits.

Bowman led the way with a 4-for-5 effort. She belted a grand slam homer and set a single-game record with nine RBIs. Reitz was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and Barry was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Stephanie Steppe added four hits and scored three runs.

Lindsay Lam pitched the shutout for the Eagles to improve to 7-2 on the season. She allowed just two hits while striking out one and walking one.

The Eagles are now 19-3 overall and 8-0 in the ODAC. Guilford drops to 5-19 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
