Box Score Harrisonburg, Va. (3-24-07) -- Eastern Mennonite University and Guilford College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon on Gehman Field. The Quakers won game one 1-0, while EMU pulled out an 8-5 comeback win in the second game.
The Lady Royals are now 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the ODAC, while the Quakers record stands at 5-17 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Pitching told the story in game one as EMU starting pitcher Natasha Viafora allowed only one run on seven hits through seven innings with eight strike outs, but Guilford pitcher Taryn Pulvermuller allowed only three hits through seven innings to outduel Viafora and pick up the win.
The Quakers' Kelly Hale drove in the game's only run with a first-inning double, scoring leadoff hitter Ciara Locklear.
The EMU bats again remained dormat in the second game until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Royals exploded for seven runs on five hits to pull out the comeback win.
EMU was down 5-1 heading into the inning before second baseman Mandee Madden led off the inning with a walk. A single by third baseman Miranda White brought up Viafora who blasted a three-run home run to cut the Quakers' lead to 5-4.
Thanks to two Quakers' errors, the inning continued as shortstop Hayley Shepard doubled in two runs and Madden followed with an RBI triple to push the Lady Royals lead to 8-5.
Starting pitcher Jamie Fraysher closed out the game in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.
Shepard went 2-for-4 at the dish for EMU with two runs scored and two RBIs while Madden collected two hits in three trips to the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.
Kelly Guarnieri had a strong day for the Quakers as the sophomore catcher was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Locklear and Pulvermuller each went 2-for-4 with a runs scored in the second game for Guilford.
