Softball Drops Doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (3/22/07) -- Visiting Virginia Wesleyan swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball double-header at Guilford College Thursday. The Marlins (5-13, 2-2 ODAC) won the opener, 14-4, in five innings. Va. Wesleyan won the nightcap, 12-1, also in five innings.

The Marlins took advantage of two Guilford errors and a walk in an eight-run first inning in the opener. Lindsey Churchill (1-4, 2 RBI) and Bree Strain (3-3, 5 RBI) hit two-run doubles in the first and Betty Stewart (3-3, 2 RBI) added a two-run single in the inning. Virginia Wesleyan scored five times in the second inning, thanks in part to a two-run double by Strain and a two-run single by Mandy Nixon (2-4, 2 RBI).

Jess Sacra, the second of three Marlins' pitchers, earned the win with two innings of three-hit ball. She fanned three and walked two. Kelly Hale and Kelly Guarnieri hit RBI doubles for the Quakers (4-16, 0-4 ODAC).

Allison Cockrell (2-3, 2 RBI) broke a 1-1 tie in the second game with a lead-off homer in the second inning, the first of her two bombs on the day. Nixon added a two-run single in the second, which gave the Marlins a 4-1 lead through one and a half innings. She also hit a two-run single to key Va. Wesleyan's four-run third inning. Cassi Jordan knocked a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the fifth inning for the Marlins. Sterling Valentine earned her first college win with a five-inning, four-hit effort.

Guarnieri plated Guilford's lone run with an RBI groundout in the first. Sara Vaisvilas (0-4) took the loss on the mound.

Guilford visits Eastern Mennonite Saturday (3/24) for a 3:00 p.m. ODAC double-header in Harrisonburg, Va. The Marlins visit league-rival Roanoke Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
