Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C. (2/22/07) -- Greensboro College won its home opener with a five inning 8-0 victory over visiting Guilford College at Salvation Army Field.
The Pride win featured two home runs, including an inside-the-park dinger by Jennifer Simms. Britney Smith (2-2, 2 RBI, HR), Jenee Johnson (2-3, 2 RBI, double) and Kendra Leghart (1-2, 2 RBI) led all Pride hitters.
Jordan Davenport (2-0) completed five innings of work, allowing just one hit to the Quakers (1-4), while striking out three batters. The victory moves GC to 6-1 on the season.
Scoring at least one run in all five innings of action, Greensboro College closed out the game with a three-run fifth inning, capitalizing on four hits for the victory. With one out, Megan Knight singled through the right field side, followed by a single up the middle by Daniels. Leghart continued the inning with a single to center field, scoring the pinch-runner Katie Davis from second. Johnson put the finishing touches on the game with a double to centerfield for the final two runs.
Greensboro College jumped out early with a towering home run over the left field wall by Britney Smith scoring the first run of the game.
The Pride added to the 1-0 lead in the second, when with one out Jennifer Simms hit an inside-the-park home run into the left center field gap, giving GC a two-run advantage. Joy Daniels reached after being hit by a pitch, putting herself into scoring position with a steal of second base, before Kendra Leghart followed with a single to left centerfield scoring Daniels for the 3-0 Pride lead.
Smith started the third inning with a single to right field, moving to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher with Margaret Hamm at the plate. Two batters later a swinging bunt by Simms brought Smith plateward stretching the lead to 4-0.
Daniels continued the Pride hit parade with a bunt down the left field line to reach base successful starting out the fourth. With one out, back-to-back singles by Jenee Johnson and Jessica Clack loaded the bases for Smith. A sacrifice fly to left field scored Smith's second RBI, meanwhile giving Greensboro a 5-0 lead.

A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference, as Greensboro College defeated Guilford College by a 10-7 final, sweeping the softball doubleheader at Salvation Army Field.
Britney Smith (3-3, 2 RBI, 3B) and Lauren Manning (2-4, 4 RBI) provided the Pride with punch from the plate, while managing 13 hits as a team, helping move the Greensboro record to 7-1 overall. DeNina Eldridge (3-4, 3 RBI, HR) and Kelly Hale (2-4) were the only Quaker batters with multiple hits, as Guilford slips to 1-5.
Stacie Patterson (1-0) worked three innings, in relief of Erin Jolly, scattering four hits while allowing one run and striking out two batters. Teammate Erica Brown faced one batter in the seventh to earn her first save.
The fourth inning began with Back-to-back singles by Jenee Johnson and Jessica Clack led off the fourth inning for Greensboro, who loaded the bases with a walk by Smith. With one out, Lauren Manning singled to right field, clearing the base pads, and allowing The Pride to regain the lead at 9-6. Two batters later Ryeleigh Loftin singled just inside the left field line to bring Manning homeward for the inning's fourth and final run.
Johnson led off the game with a single up the middle, moving into scoring position on a passed ball with Clack at the plate. Britney Smith singled back to the mound for the second hit of the inning, before Valeri Calcagni grounded out to second base, bringing Johnson home for the 1-0 advantage.
Guilford exacted its revenge in the second inning, with a leadoff single back up the middle by Kelly Hale for the first hit of the game. Zenovia Hogue followed in the order, reaching on an error by Smith, putting two runners in play. Cleanup hitter DeNina Eldridge sent a three-run home run over the left field fence for the 3-1 Quaker lead, marking the only runs of the inning.
The Quakers added one run in the fourth, a home run that was wind swept over the field wall by Kelly Guarnieri, stretching the lead to 4-1.
Greensboro rallied in the home half of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate, starting the inning off with Jennifer Simms reaching after being hit by the pitch. Clack followed with a double to left field, putting Simms in scoring position, only to be driven home on a bases clearing triple by Smith, cutting the Quaker lead to one run. With two outs, Lauren Manning singled up the middle to keep the inning alive, knotting the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded Natalie Loftin singled back up the middle to score Manning and teammate Ryeligh Loftin for the go-ahead 6-4 runs.
Guilford struck back in the fourth, putting two runners on base with a single to left field by Micki Boulineau. After a wild pitch moved Boulineau to second and teammate Emma Shew to third, Taryn Pulvermuller's two-out double to left center field tied the game at 6-6.
In the seventh, the Quakers did manage one run, when with two outs Hale doubled to right center keeping the inning alive. Hogue reached on a throwing error at short, scoring Hale for the final run of the contest.
