BRIDGEWATER BEATS GUILFORD, 4-3, IN FIRST ROUND OF ODAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Salem, VA (4/23/05) -- Corey Payne's one-out, bases-loaded single through a drawn-in infield scored Jennifer Hall and gave fourth-seeded Bridgewater a 4-3 win over number-five Guilford in the opening round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Softball Tournament Saturday at the Moyer Sports Complex.

The Eagles' (24-16) third one-run win of the year over Guilford sent them into a second-round contest with top-seeded Roanoke.  The Quakers (16-23) moved to the tourney's consolation bracket to play third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in an elimination game.

Hall was placed on second base at the top of the eighth according to the international tie-break rule.  She took third on Stacey Godfrey's bunt single down the right-field line.  Lindsay Ware walked to load the bases.  After a Whitney Knighton fly out to shallow center field, Payne delivered her winning hit.

Amy Childs had a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead, but the Quakers tied the game on pitcher Christi Dunnigan's two-out single to left in the top of the fifth inning.  After Jennifer King's bunt single, Bridgewater pitcher Lisa Rhodes ended the rally by retiring Rebecca Marshall on a ground ball, which left the bases loaded with Quakers for the second straight inning.

Neither team had a base runner in the final two innings. Guilford pinch-runner Ciara Locklear was placed on second base to start the eighth frame, but Rhodes retired the next three batters and stranded Locklear at third.

Payne had two of Bridgewater's six hits and Hall scored twice.  Knighton was 1-4 with an RBI.  Rhodes fanned four in eight innings and worked around seven hits and four walks to improve to 8-9 on the year.

Dunnigan and Ashley Cooke had two hits apiece for the Quakers.  Dunnigan (10-11) took the loss on the mound, yielding six hits, four runs (3 earned) and four walks in 7.1 innings.
