Guilford's Defense Shines In 34-7 Football Win Over Washington And Lee

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (10/25/03) -- Guilford's defense forced five Washington and Lee turnovers and returned two fumbles for touchdowns in a 34-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win in the Quakers' Homecoming Game Saturday. The win ended Guilford's (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) four-game losing streak and a three-game losing skid to the Generals (2-5, 1-3 ODAC).

Guilford's Mario Paylor (Bahama, NC/Northern Durham) made a team- and career-high nine tackles and returned a fourth-quarter fumble 20 yards for a touchdown. He also made two of Guilford's 11 tackles for loss. Junior defensive end Delvin Newkirk (Wallace, NC/Rose-Hill) made seven stops, including a career-high three sacks, and forced two Generals' fumbles. Junior cornerback Jason Allen (Indian Trail, NC/Piedmont), in his first college start, returned a first-quarter fumble recovery 36 yards for a score and ended a Generals' scoring drive late the second quarter with his first career interception.

Guilford scored on its first possession on a one-yard run by freshman Micah Rushing (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle), which capped a nine-play, 49-yard drive. The Quakers went ahead 14-0 less than a minute later when Allen scooped up a Richard Garland (Fort Worth, TX/Arlington Heights) fumble and took it 36 yards into the end zone for his first career touchdown. Guilford's Matt Ledbetter (Elon, NC/Western Alamance) jarred the ball loose on the play.

Washington and Lee threatened in the second quarter when Wes Kimmel (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greely) recovered a fumble by Guilford senior quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) on the Quakers' 34-yard line. The Generals drove to the Quakers' nine-yard line, but the drive stalled at the 17-yard line and Washington and Lee returned the ball to Guilford on downs.

Guilford missed a red-zone scoring chance midway through the second quarter when Washington and Lee's Liam Murray (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) tackled Guilford's Rushing for a loss of three yards on fourth and goal from the Generals' one-yard line.

The Quakers took a 17-0 lead on its first possession of the third quarter when rookie Travis Frazier (Rougemont, NC/Person) matched his career high with a 37-yard field goal. Smith's 32-yard completion to Kyle Kiser (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth) took the Quakers to the Generals' 34-yard line and helped set up the score.

Washington and Lee got on the board late in the third quarter on a one-yard keeper by senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, VA/James Madison) that made the score 17-7. The score capped the Generals' longest drive of the day, a 12-play, 65-yard jaunt that consumed over six minutes of the quarter. Dean made a couple big plays to keep the drive alive. First, he completed a 39-yard pass to John Barnwell (Charleston, SC/Porter-Gaud) on a third-and-22 play and later picked up a first down with a two-yard keeper on a fourth-and-one play.

The Quakers answered with an eight-play, 53-yard scoring drive of its own, capped by a two-yard touchdown pass by Smith to rookie tight end CJ Graham (Cerro Gordo, NC/West Columbus), the first of his career. Frazier's extra point gave the Quakers a 24-7 edge and effectively put the game out of reach. Frazier added his second field goal of the game, this one from 36 yards out, midway through the final quarter. Paylor capped the scoring with his 20-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown off Newkirk's third sack of the game.

Guilford senior Brian Caye (Chapel Hill, NC/Northwood) gained a season-high 77 rushing yards on 19 carries. Smith completed six of 13 passes for 113 yards. Rushing added 139 all-purpose yards (25 rushing, 40 receiving, 64 returns) and a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Despite misfiring on his first five passes, Dean finished the day 17 for 35 for 201 yards. Junior Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) made four catches for 51 yards. Junior Michael Lackett (Allenwood, NJ/Wall Township) led the Generals with 63 rushing yards on 20 carries and also caught three passes for 20 yards. Murray (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) led all tacklers with 11 stops.

The Quakers host league-rival Randolph-Macon next Saturday at 1:00 pm, while the Generals host nationally ranked Bridgewater in a 1:00 pm ODAC contest.
