Greensboro, NC (09/21/02) -- Everyone in the Armfield Athletic Center except Washington and Lee thought Generals' quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, VA/James Madison) was going to spike the ball to stop the clock. Instead, he faked the spike and hit an open Tyler Callaham (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) from 17 yards out with 10 seconds left to give Washington and Lee a 31-30 road win over Guilford in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Out of time-outs, Washington and Lee moved 78 yards in seven plays in 1:20 on its winning drive.

The trickery completed the Generals' (1-1, 1-0 ODAC) comeback from a 30-18 fourth-quarter deficit after Guilford (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) cornerback Sherod Long (Ruffin, NC/Bartlett-Yancey) returned an interception 58 yards for a score with 11:18 remaining in the game.

Senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, TX/Alamo Heights) capped an 11-play, 60-yard scoring drive after Long's return with a seven-yard touchdown run with 7:26 left. Sullivan had seven carries for 54 yards on the drive and finished with a game-high 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 39 attempts. He gained 131 rushing yards in the second half and also caught a 26-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.

Guilford threatened to build on its 30-25 lead later in the final quarter, but Washington and Lee junior Ben Krasnoff (Towson, MD/Towson) stopped the Quakers' Brandon Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) for a two-yard loss on a fourth-and-three from the Generals' 20-yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Krasnoff, who missed last week's season opener due to injury, finished with a team-high 13 tackles and contributed to defensive effort that limited Guilford to 77 rushing yards and made four sacks.

Guilford held a 10-4 halftime advantage after two sluggish quarters. Washington and Lee scored on two safeties when Guilford snapped two attempted punts through the end zone. The Quakers took a 10-4 lead on a two-yard second-quarter scoring run by Marcus Ballard (Burgaw, NC/Pender) that was set up by a 30-yard Chris McKinney (Greensboro, NC/Apex) down to the Washington and Lee 38-yard line.

Guilford struck first in the third quarter on a 66-yard scoring strike from redshirt-sophomore quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro, NC/Rosewood) to senior Oren Robinson (Anderson, SC/Westside), the longest scoring play of both players' careers. The touchdown gave Guilford its largest lead of the game, 17-4. Smith completed 13 of 22 passes for a career-high 236 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns. McKinney made a game- and season-high seven grabs for 99 yards and a score.

Dean completed 10 of 23 passes for 144 yards and two second-half touchdowns with three interceptions. Callaham made four grabs for 48 yards. Sullivan, the defending NCAA Division III champ in all-purpose yards, rolled up 294 all-purpose yards.

Washington and Lee, winners of three straight versus Guilford, plays at Centre next Saturday (9/28) in a nonconference contest. The Quakers visit unbeaten Hampden-Sydney (2-0) Saturday (9/28) in an ODAC contest.
