Box Score Roanoke College sophomore Jill Hoffmeister (Norfolk, MA/The Rivers School) recorded a hat trick to lead the Maroons to a 5-1 win over Guilford in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday. The Maroons improve to 14-4 on the season with the win, while Guilford's season ends with a 9-10-2 overall mark, its third-highest win total in school history. The Maroons play three-time defending champion Lynchburg Friday morning in Salem in the semifinals. Lynchburg defeated Eastern Mennonite, 1-0, Saturday.
Hoffmeister got the Maroons on the board 8:37 into the contest. She took a long lead pass that slipped past the GC defenders from Carie Bauman (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) creating a one-on-none. She then put in the first goal of the match. In the 28th minute, freshman Taylor Howe (Winchester, MA/Winchester) created a play in the box and was fouled, resulting in a penalty kick. Howe converted the kick for the eventual game-winning goal. Hoffmeister added RC's third goal of the half on an assist from Emily Ocheltree (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman).
After Ocheltree made the score 4-0 in RC's favor by tapping in a crossing pass from Kathryn Steffens (Tampa, FL/Academy Holy Names), the Quakers scored their lone goal in the 72nd minute, a tally on a free kick by Alex Hutton (Collierville, TN/Hutchison School). Hoffmeister capped the scoring in the contest with 4:36 to play. The goal was her team-leading 15th of the season, moving herself into a tie for third on the team's all-time list. She is joined at the spot by current teammate Shelley Olds (Gilroy, CA/Groton-Dunstable (MA)).
In the Saturday's other quarterfinal action, #2 Virginia Wesleyan and #7 Randolph-Macon played to a 1-1 tie, but VWC advanced on PKs 5-4. Third-ranked Washington & Lee beat Bridgewater, 2-0, and #4 Lynchburg beat #5 EMU, 1-0. Washington & Lee and Virginia Wesleyan will play on Friday on Roanoke's Elizabeth Campus field.
