Box Score Top-seeded Lynchburg scored four second-half goals in its 4-0 win over Guilford in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday. The two-time defending league champion Hornets earn the right to host the tournament semifinals and finals this Friday (10/26) and Saturday (10/27).
Lynchburg is ranked 21st in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll.
The eighth-seeded Quakers (8-11-1) held the favored Hornets (16-1-2) scoreless for the first half before junior forward Nicole Wisniewski (Berlin, NJ/Bishop Eustace) took a feed from senior forward Suzanne Weller (Richmond, VA/Cazenovia (NY)) and tallied her 15th goal of the season in the 49th minute. Junior midfielder Jenny Clayton (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) gave the hosts a 2-0 lead just over three minutes later with her second goal of the season.
With the Quakers pressing for a goal, Weller tallied her team-leading 17th goal in the 73rd minute. Rookie back Lindsey Hegna (Cranford, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) finished the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 83rd minute.
Guilford junior goaltender Brandee Adams (Hillsborough, NJ/Princeton Day) (pictured) made a career-high 14 saves in a losing cause. The Hornets enjoyed a 31-6 shots advantage.
The loss marks the end of Guilford senior Amy Evans' (New Bern, NC/New Bern) career. She concludes arguably the best soccer career in school history as the Quakers' career leader in points (159) and goals (69) in 74 matches. She led the Quakers in scoring for the third straight season this year with a league-best 22 goals and 11 assists for an ODAC-high 59 points.
Lynchburg hosts the winner of today's Eastern Mennonite-Virginia Wesleyan match this Friday.
