Lexington, VA (10/31/00) — Junior fullback Paul Wallace (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) converted a penalty kick 5:39 into overtime to give top-seeded Washington and Lee a 2-1 win over eighth-seeded Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal match Tuesday.
The win sends the Generals (16-1), ranked 18th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Poll, into an ODAC semifinal match with fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon this Friday. The loss ends Guilford's season at 6-11-1.
Guilford junior midfielder Noam Sorek (Atlit, Israel/Ort Hiriat Bialik) set up the winning kick when he deflected a sure goal out of the Quakers' net with his hand. Sorek received a red card and the Generals' received the penalty kick, which Wallace converted for his first goal of the season.
Sorek helped Guilford force extra time with a game-tying penalty kick of his own in the 70th minute. Sorek's third goal in as many games was set up by a foul against Quakers' rookie Tim Imafidon (Raleigh, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville).
Washington and Lee took the lead with just over four minutes left in the first half on a first-time strike by junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, MD/Quince Orchard) off an assist from Michael Stoeckle (Blacksburg, VA/North Cross).
Freshman Ryan Fitzgibbons (Dayville, CT/Killingly) kept the Quakers in the game with six saves, while Washington and Lee's sophomore netminder Tim Foley (Darnestown, MD/Georgetown Prep) made three saves.
Guilford senior midfielder Brandon Costilow (Birmingham, AL/Vestavia Hills) finished his collegiate career having played 48 career matches, including 34 consecutive starts in his final two seasons. Costilow had two clear chances on goal in his final match and played a key defensive role for the Quakers.
