BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (1-5-3, 0-1-1 ODAC) battled Bridgewater College (6-3-1, 1-0-1 ODAC) to a 2-2 draw Wednesday afternoon at the Bridgewater Soccer Complex. All four goals came within the opening 30 minutes, with Sebastian Urgiles (Burlington, N.C.) finding the back of the net for the Quakers. Following the early offensive action, the match settled into a defensive battle as neither team could break through in the final 60 minutes.
Guilford finished the match with 10 shots, including five on goal, while Bridgewater recorded 14 shots with 11 on frame. The Quakers held a 4-3 advantage in saves from the Bridgewater goalkeeper, while Sam Bayer recorded seven saves for Guilford. The Eagles held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, and the two teams combined for 22 fouls.
Bridgewater held a 14-10 advantage in shots, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles also earned five corner kicks to Guilford's four and committed 12 fouls compared to the Quakers' 10. Bridgewater goalkeeper Zane Kowalski made two saves, while Guilford goalkeeper Sam Bayer (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded seven saves.
Urgiles led the Quakers offensively with three shots, all on goal, and scored both of Guilford's goals. Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Crux Fernandez Madero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) each recorded an assist, while Bayer finished with seven saves in goal.
Guilford struck first in the eighth minute when Urgiles found the back of the net off an assist from Santos at the 7:25 mark. Bridgewater answered in the 23rd minute as Lucio Bianchi scored to even the match at 1-1. Bianchi struck again in the 29th minute, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
The Quakers quickly responded, with a give-and-go up the right side of the field between Fernandez Madero and Urgiles, who ultimately found the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2.
Neither team was able to break through in the second half. Guilford put six shots toward the Bridgewater goal after halftime, including attempts on frame from Urgiles and Isaac Garbia, but Bridgewater goalkeeper Zane Kowalski turned both away. The physicality picked up in the second half, with both teams combining for five yellow cards after halftime while Bayer kept the Eagles off the board with six second-half saves, including stops on shots from Trey Widrick and Braxton Sebastian in the final 21 minutes.
The Quakers are back in action Thursday, October 1 as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Johnson & Wales University. First kick is set for 6:00 PM.
