GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (1–42, 0-1-0 ODAC) opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Armfield Athletic Center, falling to Hampden-Sydney College (7-0-1, 1-0-0 ODAC), 5-2.
The Quakers finished with seven shots, including four on goal, while Hampden-Sydney finished with one less, but all five that were on frame, ended in the back of the net. Both teams earned three corner kicks, while Guilford committed nine fouls compared to 13 by the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney opened scoring early, finding the back of the net twice in 15 minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. The Quakers defense held the Tigers off the board for the remainder of the frame, but were not able to find more than one shot of their own, leading to the 2-0 Hampden-Sydney lead going into the half.
The Tigers came out of half time with fire, scoring three times within seven minutes to lengthen the lead to five goals, over the Quakers' zero. Guilford defense held Hampden-Sydney off the board, and eventually sparked some offense, when in the 69th minute, when Sebastian Urges finished off of a rebound from the Tigers goalkeeper. With less than two minutes left in the game, a Tigers defended tipped the ball to Jake Carter at the top of the box, who slotted the ball to the bottom left corner of the net.
Guilford continued to pressure the Tigers in the final minutes, but Hampden-Sydney held on to secure the 5-2 victory.
The Quakers return to action Wednesday, October 1, traveling to Bridgewater College for a 4:00 p.m. ODAC matchup.
