GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (0-3-1, 0-0-0 ODAC) battled Southern Virginia University (0-3-1, 0-0-0 USA South) to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers came out strong offensively, recording the first three shots of the match before Sebastian Urgiles (Burlington, N.C.) put Guilford on the board in the sixth minute. The freshman won a 50/50 ball near the top of the box before firing a shot from 12 yards out into the top-left corner of the net for his first career goal. Southern Virginia answered in the 23rd minute when Logan Gubler converted a free kick from 29 yards out, sending the match into halftime tied, 1-1.
Guilford continued to pressure the Knights in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities, but could not convert. Urges nearly added a second goal in the 62nd minute, hitting the right post on a shot. The Quakers continued to control possession and generate chances throughout the half, with Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark), Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.), and Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) each recording shots on goal, but the Knights' goalkeeper made four saves to keep the match tied.
The Quakers' defense also held strong throughout the second half, limiting Southern Virginia to just three shots. Xavier Porter (Belmont, N.C.) made two saves in goal, including stops on attempts by Jacob Nielsen and Dexter Gunderson to preserve the tie.
Guilford finished the match with an 18-5 advantage in shots and held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Quakers also earned five corner kicks compared to none for Southern Virginia, while the Knights held a 6-2 advantage in saves.
The Quakers take a week off from competition before returning to action on Saturday, September 19 at Bluefield University (Va.). First kick is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
