BLUEFIELD, Va. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (0-3-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) battled to a 1-1 draw against Bluefield University (2-3-1) Saturday evening at Graham High School.
The Quakers controlled the offensive side of the field, outshooting the Rams 18-9 and putting 10 shots on goal compared to three for Bluefield. Guilford also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, while Bluefield led in fouls, 16-10.
Manu Diaz (Madrid, Spain) led the Quakers with four shots and two on goal, while Talan Coogle (Lexington, N.C.) added three shots and two on goal. Kris Saborit (Barcelona, Spain) scored the lone Quakers goal on his only shot of the game. Sam Bayer (Lakeville, Minn.) earned the start in net, played all 90 minutes, and made two saves.
Guilford struck first in the 14th minute when Saborit scored his first goal of the season to give the Quakers a 1-0 advantage. Bluefield responded just over three minutes later when Sebastian Armijos found the back of the net off an assist from Landon Murnahan, tying the match at 1-1.
The Quakers continued to pressure the Rams throughout the remainder of the first half, recording seven shots in the opening 45 minutes. The BU goalkeeper made four saves in the first half to keep the match level heading into halftime.
Guilford generated 11 shots in the second half, including five on goal, but with five saves by the Rams' keeper, the Quakers were kept off the board. Bayer and the Guilford defense held Bluefield to just three second-half shots, as neither team was able to find a game-winning goal.
Guilford returns to action on Tuesday, September 22, hosting Mary Baldwin University at 2:30 PM at the Armfield Athletic Center.
