Gray Achieves Numerous Program Career-Marks, Softball Locks Sweep Over Randolph

Parnell secures first collegiate complete game and victory in rubber match

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On the back of a milestone-driven performance by Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.), the Guilford College softball team (13-14-1, 3-5 ODAC) steered back into the win column with a sweep over Randolph College (2-20, 0-8 ODAC) off a walkoff infield single from Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) to close a 3-2 Guilford victory in game one and pulling away with a nine-hit outing, resulting in a 6-2 decision in favor of the Quakers on Wednesday evening at Haworth Field.
 
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) pitched a gem in her complete game, 7.0 inning outing, surrendering two runs off three hits, two walks, striking out four for the victory to advance to 3-4 overall. With the complete game, Gray moved up to tied for first in program history for career complete games, 51 in total, matching Jennifer Evans '06 all-time. Gray currently sits in second place overall with 468.2 innings pitched, surpassing Jessica Burcham '12 in program history. Gray currently stands second in program history for career wins, tallying an overall record of 37-35 during her time at Guilford.
 
Austyn Moran drew the start in the circle for the WildCats, tossing 6.2 innings, dropping three earned runs off nine hits, four walks, striking out four, falling to 0-8 on the year.
 
Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) topped Guilford at the plate, slashing 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) followed suit with a 1-for-3 display, collecting a walk to her name. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) logged three walks, recording many scoring chances for the Quakers in the opener. Kaylyn Little (Locust, N.C.) launched an RBI-double while slashing 1-for-3, scoring a run in the process.
 
Rylee Humble led Randolph at the plate, hitting 1-for-2 with one run, one RBI, and one run scored. Laura Herzig bashed 1-for-4 with one run. Addy Compton recorded 1-for-3 to her name.
 
Emma Parnell (Troy, N.C.) pitched a solid outing for the first collegiate complete game of her career in a 7.0 inning effort, giving two runs off eight hits, three walks, and striking out four in her first career win, advancing to 1-1 on the season.
 
Rylee Humble got the nod in the circle for the rubber match, pitching 5.0 innings, dropping three runs, two earned off five hits, one walk, punching out one for the loss, falling to 1-10 overall. Delaney Sipes entered for Randolph in the sixth, unable to find her footing in 1.0 frames, giving up three earned runs off four hits.
 
Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) sent 3-for-4 knocks at the plate for the Quakers, with one double and two RBIs. Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) launched her third homerun of the season in a 2-for-4 effort with two runs and one RBI. Kaylyn Little (Locust, N.C.) kicked off the Guilford scoring run late, bashing 1-for-3 with one RBI and one double. Makaylah Barger (Albermarle, N.C.) cashed in another run with her first career base hit and RBI, slashing 1-for-1.
 
Haili Gonzalez was dominant at the dish for the WildCats, hitting 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. While in the circle, Rylee Humble would follow suit, logging a 2-for-4 showing. Alexx Reinwald matched Randolph's consistencies in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
 
GAME 1     
The WildCats cruised in scoring early on with Riley Humble sending the single through the right side, scoring Laura Herzig off an errant throw. Addy Compton took advantage of defensive miscues by Guilford, sending Humble home in the process in the first, extending Randolph's lead 2-0.
 
With the bases loaded in the third, Kaylyn Little (Locust, N.C.) sent a sac-groundout to cash in the first Guilford run of the doubleheader. It all came down to Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.), who sent an RBI single up the middle in the fifth to tie things up at two apiece. Newton would walk things off with an RBI single to the shortstop, closing a 3-2 decision in favor of Guilford.
 
GAME 2
After no scoring to kickoff game two, Riley Humble took advantage of a Quakers' fielding mishap in the third, sending home Haili Gonzalez for Randolph to take an early 1-0 lead. Guilford cashed in with Savannah Newton's (Concord, N.C.) solo home run in the third and Kaylyn Little's (Locust, N.C.) RBI double in the fourth to steal the WildCats' lead away, 2-1.
 
Guilford extended their lead 3-2 in the fifth off a Randolph passed-ball, before Makaylah Barger (Albermarle, N.C.) added on to that total with an RBI-single into center. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) sent a 2-RBI double into left center, putting this game on ice for a 6-2 decision and the sweep in favor of Guilford.
 
The Quakers enter a tough road stretch ahead, first battling against Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, April 11th, at Carol Estes Park. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM, with game two at 3:00 PM.
