Softball Taken Down In Pair By Randolph-Macon

Quakers held to five hits throughout doubleheader

ASHLAND, Va. – The Guilford College softball team (13-16-1, 3-7 ODAC) began their long road stand just north of the river city at Randolph-Macon College (17-13, 4-6 ODAC), unable to find their footing throughout both contests, while knocking two hits in a 9-0 decision in favor of the Yellow Jackets, and not faring much better with three hits in game two, dropping game two, 9-0 in favor of Randolph Macon on Saturday afternoon at Carol Estes Park.

Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) received the start in the opener for the Quakers in the circle, struggling to gain ground throughout the second, tossing 1.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits, one walk, striking out one for the loss, falling to 3-5 on the year. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) was unable to steer Guilford into the right direction in 2.2 frames, surrendering four earned runs on six hits and two walks in relief.

The Randolph-Macon pitching was superb, holding the Quakers only to two hits throughout game one. Kailey Jackson got the nod for the Yellow Jackets in the circle, 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, one walk, striking out one for the victory, advancing to 7-7 overall. Courtney Guthrie matched Jackson's performance in relief, pitching 2.0 innings, only allowing one hit while striking out one.

Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) and Keiya Bullock (Peletier, N.C.) each got on base to give Guilford any chance at cashing in runs, both bashing 1-for-2. Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) reached first on a walk early in the first, brining positive momentum through an 0-for-1 showing.

Tori Powell led Randolph-Macon to a dominant performance at the plate, slashing 2-for-2 with two runs, one walk, one double, and two bags swiped. Katerina Brabson matched Powell's line in the box score with a 2-for-2 display, with one run, two RBIs, and one walk. Jordan Brown followed suit for the Yellow Jackets, hitting 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two stolen bases.

Emma Parnell (Troy, N.C.) was in the circle for Guilford in the rubber match, faltering in the opening stages of the contest, throwing 1.1 innings, surrendering five runs, three earned, on four hits while striking out one for the loss, falling to 1-2 overall. Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) entered from the bullpen early in the second, faltering in 2.2 innings of work, dropping four runs, two earned, on five hits, and one walk.

Sierra Kegley dominated in the circle for the Yellow Jackets in game two, pitching 4.0 solid frames, only giving up two hits, striking out three for the win, advancing to 8-3 on the season. Courtney Guthrie came in for her second relief-stint of the afternoon, tossing 1.0 inning, dropping one hit, and struck out one to close out the final battle.

Olivia Shelton (Stokesdale, N.C.), Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.), and Kaley Mitchell (Lake Waccamaw, N.C.) were the lone Quakers that got on base off knocks in game two, each recording 1-for-2 at the plate with Shelton snagging a double in the second.

Ashley Bush cruised in the closing contest to bash a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, and a double in the process. Tori Powell added on to the perfect tally with a 2-for-2 outing for Randolph-Macon, scoring twice and swiping one bag in the rubber match.

GAME 1
Ashley Bush kicked off the scoring in the initial moments of the clash, sending a three-run homer into left center to give Randolph-Macon a 3-0 lead in the first. Katerina Brabson sent two to home plate in the second with her 2-RBI single into center, while two more runs were added on by the Yellow Jackets later on in the inning. The game would be out of reach for the Quakers as Jordan Brown closed the victory with a single up the middle, sealing a 9-0 decision in favor of Randolph-Macon through five innings.

GAME 2
Randolph-Macon continued to add on runs throughout the closing clash, as Ashley Bush sent a single into center, while Mya Davis reached safely off a Guilford defensive error to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. More runs would ensue for Randolph-Macon off Reagan Hill's single up the middle, putting Guilford in a whole early, 5-0 through one inning.

Things would ramp back up in the fourth as Ashley Bush sent an RBI-double into left-center, scoring one. Katerina Brabson created trouble for the Quakers off her RBI-single into center, later sending home another runner off flustered momentum from Guilford defensively. Kiley Lamberth put this game on ice in the fourth with her single into left, scoring Brabson to close a 9-0 decision in favor of Randolph-Macon.

In a quick turnaround, Guilford faces their most challenging test of the season ahead, clashing against No. 1 nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday, April 12th, at Broyles Field. First pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 PM, with game two commencing at 3:00 PM.
