GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (4-6, 0-3 ODAC) faced a tough conference test on Saturday afternoon, falling 21-5 to a high-powered Shenandoah University squad (7-4, 2-0 ODAC) at Appenzeller Field. Despite 11 successful clears and a double-digit save performance from the defense, the Hornets' relentless offensive pressure proved to be the difference.
Marlene Nusraty (Damascus, Md.) remained a workhorse in the cage for Guilford, recording 10 saves and leading the team with five ground balls. On the visitor's side, Shenandoah utilized a trio of goalkeepers to secure the victory. Erin Nash earned the win with three saves in 30 minutes of work, while Madison Perry and Maddie Gaboury combined for 30 minutes, with Perry turning away one shot.
Shenandoah's attack was spearheaded by Emily Ransom, who found the back of the net five times, and Addison Harmel and Ayla Jantz, who each added four goals.
Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) continued her role as a primary playmaker for the Quakers, leading the team with three points on two goals and an assist.
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) also contributed a multi-point effort with a goal and an assist of her own.
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) contributed to the possession game with three draw controls, while
Trinity Whitfield (Greensboro, N.C.) directed the defense, scooping up a ground ball in the process.
The Hornets jumped out to a fast start, using a dominant 7-0 first quarter to establish control.
Guilford found its rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Hornets in the middle of the frame.
Chanelle Fossie (Westampton, N.J.) put the Quakers on the board at the 9:20 mark, followed quickly by back-to-back strikes from Wood and DeFeo to cut into the lead. However, Shenandoah responded with late goals to take a 14-3 advantage into halftime.
In the second half,
Hannah McMasters (Browns Summit, N.C.) added her 31st goal of the season during the third period, while Wood capped the Guilford scoring in the fourth quarter following a feed from DeFeo. Despite the Quakers' effort, the Hornets' depth was on display as they added seven goals across the final 30 minutes to seal the result, 21-5.
The Quakers will look to bounce back as they stay at home for a cross-town rivalry matchup; Guilford hosts Greensboro College on Tuesday, March 31st, with the opening draw scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
