GREENSBORO, N.C - The Guilford College women's basketball team (18-4, 9-4 ODAC) hosted a crucial clash at home for future conference tournament seeding in the homestretch against Bridgewater College (17-4, 10-2 ODAC). The Quakers would hold strong throughout most of regulation, unfortunately falling short to the Eagles in a low-scoring affair, 54-48, on Jack Jensen Court inside the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Pregame, the Quakers would honor their five senior players,
Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.),
Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.),
Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece),
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.), and
Anaida Datilus (Chantily, France) for their contributions to the Guilford College women's basketball program.
Exploding out of the gate offensively, Guilford would control scoring of all aspects firing .700 (7-10) from the field, 1.000 (2-2) from the three-point arc, and .778 (7-9) from the free-throw line. The Eagles would fire back on all cylinders, shutting down the Quakers to only shoot .111 (4-36) from the field and .000 (0-9) from the arc in the second-half.
Dunn would lead the charge on the back of her precise shooting from the three-point arc, launching .267 (4-15) from the field, .667 (2-3) from the three-point line, with one assist with three steals snagged, recording a 10-point afternoon.
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) followed-suit recording 12 points, mostly coming from her solid outing from the free-throw line shooting .800 (8-10) from that mark, adding on three steals defensively. Giannopoulou contributed to the comeback late from her shooting .363 (4-11) from the field, collecting 11 rebounds, ten defensively, with one assist, one steal, and four blocks in the process.
Riley Corcoran commanded all aspects of the game throughout her 22-point outing, shooting .438 (7-16) from the field and .500 (8-16) from the free-throw line, contributing three assists and one steal to the box score. Autumn Gentry made her presence known from a quality 11-point afternoon shooting .625 (5-8) from the field with one assist and two steals.
The game would commence with Guilford rolling offensively, scoring off Dunn's early two three-pointers, along with early Bridgewater foul trouble to propel the Quakers to a 23-15 lead through one period.
The second quarter was all Corcoran for the Eagles, benefiting through adding 12-points from her dominance in the field, resulting in the Quakers to trail Bridgewater 33-31 at halftime.
Although Walter and Massenburg would contribute to minimal Guilford scoring midway through the third, the Quakers would trail for the first time all contest, 46-40, heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Minimal shot conversions would result in Guilford's downfall in an attempt to comeback late in the fourth, resulting in a 54-48 decision in favor of Bridgewater.
Guilford will turn back around for a challenging road slate of ODAC games ahead, first against the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, February 11th inside TowneBank Arena. Tip-off commences at 6:00 PM.
