Women’s Basketball Outmatched on Offense at No. 4 Washington & Lee

Glahn, Giannopoulou reach double figures in losing outing

LEXINGTON, Va. - Guilford College women's basketball team (18-7, 9-7 ODAC) headed on the road for their final regular season clash against No. 4 nationally-ranked Washington & Lee University (25-0, 16-0 ODAC). The lack of offensive firepower would ultimately be the Quakers' downfall, falling to the nationally-recognized Generals, 85-62, inside Holekamp Gym Saturday afternoon.

Guilford open the contest shooting .357 (10-28) from the field in the opening-half compared to Washington-Lee's .429 (15-35) shooting percentage inside the arc. Guilford would become subdued throughout the concluding half due to foul trouble with the Generals firing .800 (24-30) from the line. However, both sides would fail to display any firepower around the arc for the entirety of regulation with the Quakers launching .357 (5-14) and the Generals launching .045 (1-22) from that mark.

Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) led the charge for Guilford with 13 points off shooting .417 (5-12) from the field and .500 (3-6) from the line. Giannopoulou would snag six defensive rebounds and one steal on the defensive side of the ball. Karly Glahn (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded 11 points on the afternoon, shooting .667 (4-6) from the field and .400 (2-5) from the line, cashing in on one three-pointer in the process. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) followed-suit with a nine-point outing, shooting .363 (4-11) from the field and .333 (1-3) from the arc. Scott collected five defensive rebounds and two steals on the opposite side of the ball.

Mary Schleusner drove the Generals to victory through her 31-point afternoon, commanding the field from converting .565 (13-23) of her shots along with shooting .833 (5-6) from the line. Schleusner would snag the lone double-double of the afternoon, with 21 rebounds, 12 defensively, with three blocks and five steals. Quinn McGuinness followed-suit with 18 points, mostly collected off shooting .900 (9-10) from the line, along with .333 (4-12) of her shots converted from the field and four steals gathered defensively. Coming off the bench, Riley Bryant recorded 14 points of her own for the Generals, shooting .778 (7-9) from the field.

The contest would commence with Guilford struggling to find their footing. Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) and Anaida Datilus (Chantilly, France) would land several jumpers to keep the Quakers in the game, trailing 22-15 through one period.

No defensive help would ensue for the Quakers as Schleusner and Bryant would control the paint, extending Washington & Lee's lead, 48-27, heading into the break.

Coming out of the half, Guilford would find their footing slightly, off late-quarter contributions from Scott and Dunn to keep the Quakers in the game, trailing 67-44 heading into the fourth.

Lack of possession control would falter Guilford's opportunities to strike in the closing ten minutes of play, dropping a road conference battle, 85-62, to No. 4 nationally-ranked Washington & Lee University.

Guilford is set to travel for the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals, facing No. 4 seed Shenandoah University on Wednesday, February 25th, inside the James R. Wilkins Jr., Athletics & Events Center. Tip-off will commence at 7:00 PM.
