FOREST, Va. – Opening the spring with a victory,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) of the Guilford College men's tennis team were selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Doubles Team of the Week for the week ending on February 15
th, as announced by the conference offices on Monday afternoon.
The Quaker tandem claimed GC's lone doubles victory by a score of 6-4 over Piedmont University's Mark Backeberg and Rohan Kavali, although Guilford ultimately fell in the match 6-1. For Mercedes, the win is his third doubles victory of the season, bringing his career wins total to 37 in tandems action, elevating into sole possession of eighth in program history. He is now 3-1 in doubles play alongside Oye.
Mercedes is no stranger to conference accolades as a three-time All-ODAC pick in both singles and doubles and the ODAC Rookie of the Year in 2023, among other honors. He was twice named the ODAC Player of the Week previously, but those were for his solo efforts. For Oye, this marks his first-career league weekly honor. The first year that the ODAC has distributed an award for the conference's top tandem on a weekly basis, the senior duo becomes the first pair to get the award for GC.
