GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College men's tennis team fell to Johnson and Wales of Charlotte, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon, at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts.
Guilford competed in two doubles matches and four singles matches against the Wildcats, with Johnson and Wales earning points in each of the matches played. The Wildcats also earned points by forfeit in the No. 3 doubles match and Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.) and
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) competed in the No. 1 doubles spot, taking the only win of the day for the Quakers, 6-1, but due to the forfeit in the No. 3 position, had no chance at taking the doubles point.
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.) and
Abdullah El Mouaquite (Queens, N.Y.) were the second tandem, and fell 1-6 against the Wildcats.
Hardie battled at the No. 1 spot in singles, taking the first set 6-4, but dropping the second two sets to Justin Wagner, 2-6, and 4-10 in a tiebreaker.
The No. 2 spot belonged to Brown, who dominated the first set against Maxwell Frederick 6-1, before falling 3-6, and then 4-10 in a tiebreaker, as well.
Turner fell to Justin Gray of the Wildcats, 4-6, 3-6 in the four spot, followed by El Mouaquite dropping his singles match 2-6, 0-6.
The Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches were forfeited by the Quakers, finalizing the 7-0 decision in favor of the Wildcats.
The Guilford College men's tennis team travels to Pfeiffer University for the Knapp Family Invitational, which takes place on October 23 and 24.
