SALISBURY, N.C. – Kateria Peters' (Wilmington, N.C.) record-setting freshman campaign continued at the Salisbury Community Park, posting the eighth-best 5K time in program history to lead the women's squad, while the men's team secured a seventh place team finish behind a trio of career-best marks as the Guilford College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Livingstone XC Challenge hosted by Livingstone University on Friday morning.
Peters finished with a mark of 20:38.3 for the Quakers, registering the 12
th sub-21-minute 5K in program history and the first to crack that threshold since Emily Winder at the Queen City Invite on September 27, 2019. Peters' mark is the fastest overall since Sommer Fanney '18 registered a 20:12.6 at the Hagan Stone Classic on October 7, 2017, as the time slots in as the eighth-best 5K time in program history. In terms of placing, Peters' finish of sixth ranks as the 12
th-best in program history, but would have stood sixth at season's open, having been bumped down by strong placings by herself and her teammates earlier in the fall.
With nine women's teams and seven men's programs sending representatives, the field was near-completely comprised of NCAA Division-II, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) squads, the same league as the hosting Blue Bears. Although a couple of local junior colleges and the Quakers also made the trip to Salisbury. Winston-Salem State University claimed five of the top-six finishers to win the women's field, followed by Fayetteville State University and Bluefield State University amongst the six teams who factored into the team standings. GC was one-of-seven teams to net a team score in the men's race, and actually tied with Clinton in the team scoring, but fell to seventh via tiebreaker. The top-three in that competition was Livingstone, Bluefield State, and then Shaw University.
The men ran their 8K race first on this day as 41 runners took off with the opening gun.
Yassine Aallam (Holly Springs, N.C.) topped the Quakers once again, registering a season-best mark of 32:17.3 to claim 12
th. Then came a run of freshmen posting PRs for Guilford, first for
Landis Brown (Lexington, N.C.) who claimed 27
th with a time of 36:27.6.
Oscar Brock (New Orleans, La.) followed with a 37:26.9 time to claim 31
st place ahead of
Brennan Branch (Charlotte, N.C.), who took 39
th with a 46:00.4 mark.
Jeremiah Coley (Upper Marlboro, Md.) wrapped up GC scorers with a 49:44.2 time to secure 41
st place.
In the latter, women's 5K, the Quakers put a tandem of runners within the top-12 out of the 46 finishers. Of course,
Kateria Peters wrote some history and was the top freshman finisher on the day, but her sister
Kalaia Peters (Wilmington, N.C.) was the second first year to cross the finish line in the field, claiming 12
th overall for GC with an early-career PR of her own, posting a 22:17.2 time.
Kaleah Peters (Wilmington, N.C.) rounded out the triplets, placing 38
th with a 28:29.7 in her first-collegiate 5K finish.
Guilford heads to South Carolina and Coker University in a couple weeks for their final tune-up before the ODAC Championship running in the Coker Cobra Invite on Friday, October 23 beginning at 4:00 PM.
