DARLINGTON, S.C. – Running the fastest 5K by a Quaker in over a decade-and-a-half,
Kateria Peters (Wilmington, N.C.) posted the second-best mark in the women's programs history, while the men saw a pair of PRs at the top en route to a 13
th place team finish as the Guilford College men's and women's cross country teams ran at the Coker Cobras Invitational, hosted by Coker College at the Darlington Raceway on Friday evening.
Finishing just 5.8 seconds off the pace of 20:05.9 set by Anne Mogavero at the Charlotte Invitational on September 30, 2011, Peters settles into the runner-up spot in the record book with a 20:11.7. She did, however, up her already broken program record with her fourth top-10 finish of the year across just five races, setting up for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship (ODAC) race next Saturday.
It was a field largely comprised of Division-II institutions out of the 17 women's teams and 15 men's programs in attendance, with a handful of Division-III and NAIA squads also making the trip out to compete at the fast, flat, all-grass course. Benefiting from a strong pack with three finishers between fourth and seventh, USC Aiken seized the victory past Lander University and Lees-McRae University in the women's 5K race. The Bearcats and Bobcats swapped spots in second and third in the men's 8K race, but this time it would be Belmont Abbey College who would top the scoreboard both individually and as a collective as all-five scorers cracked the top-20.
It would be ladies first at Darlington Raceway and
Kateria Peters continued her strong running, setting a PR, finishing as the top Division-III competitor by a healthy margin, and grabbing ninth overall out of the 95 total runners.
Piper Campbell (Wilmington, N.C.) would finish as the second DIII runner with another personal best of 21:24.8 to claim 20
th, just two spots ahead of
Kalaia Peters (Wilmington, N.C.) and her PR of 21:26.2.
Bailey Overstreet (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out the Quaker women with a mark of 41:58.9 to place 94
th in her collegiate debut.
The men ran second and were highlighted by a couple of PRs from their leaders as
Tynarie Mckinney (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Yassine Aallam (Holly Springs, N.C.) finished back-to-back in 84
th and 85
th, and as the third and fourth Division-III runners out of the overall field of 112. Consistently competing in prior races this fall, Mckinney got the better of Aallam for the first time, with his mark of 31:14.2 just ahead the junior's 31:17.4.
Jeremy Harway (Apex, N.C.) followed up in his season debut, running a 37:08.4 to place 102
nd.
Oscar Brock (New Orleans, La.) and
Brennan Branch (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out the Quakers with Brock taking 108
th with a 42:47.1 and Branch finishing in 46:05.2 to claim 112
th.
It is championship season next for Guilford, as they will run at the ODAC Championship meet hosted by Shenandoah University at Kernstown Battlefield in Winchester, Va. on Saturday, October 31. The women will race at 10:00 AM ahead of the first gun for the men, at 11:00 AM.
