GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College volleyball team (6-14, 2-3 ODAC) returned to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at the Ragan-Brown FieldHouse, falling to the University of Lynchburg (13-4, 4-2 ODAC) in three sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-19).
The Quakers recorded 18 kills against 16 errors on 84 attacks for a .024 hitting percentage, while Lynchburg totaled 39 kills on 102 attacks for a .225 hitting percentage. The Hornets also held advantages in aces, 9-3, and assists, 38-16. Guilford held a 41-44 edge in digs, while both teams recorded two blocks.
Olivia Thorne (Huntersville, N.C.) led the Quakers offensively with seven kills, while Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.) added five kills and Ashlin Paul (Hampstead, N.C.) contributed four. Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) recorded 10 assists and 10 digs, while Karly Peacock (Honolulu, Hawaii) added eight digs. Maiya Yeaton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced Guilford with two blocks, while Peacock, Makenna Brown and Jayanna Spurgeon (Duncan, S.C.) each recorded an ace.
Lynchburg was led by Leah DiNardo, who recorded a match-high 10 kills, while Ava Meinhardt and Kate Hardie added eight and seven kills, respectively. Alexis Scipione totaled 17 assists, while Kenstin Phelps added 14 assists. Mia Hinkamper led the Hornets with 11 digs, while Hardie recorded a team-high three aces.
The first set began with a Quakers point on a Hornets service error, which was responded with a Lynchburg service error to even the score. The two teams went back and forth, keeping the score within a few points, and trading the lead. Lynchburg took a steady lead that they didn't give up in the middle of the set, and took the win, 25-20.
The Hornets carried this momentum in the second set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. Guilford stayed within striking distance at 10-9, but Lynchburg used a 10-2 run to take control and eventually claimed the set 25-13.
Lynchburg opened the third set with a 5-2 lead and maintained the advantage throughout the frame. Guilford battled to stay within reach, trailing 15-10 midway through the set, but the Hornets extended their lead late and closed out the match with a 25-19 victory.
Guilford returns to action Friday, October 9, when the Quakers travel to face Randolph-Macon College at 7 p.m.
