Volleyball Falls Short in Five Set Thriller at Randolph Macon

Quakers Rally to Take 2-1 Lead Before Falling in Deciding Fifth Set

Ashland, Va. -- In a narrow five-set bout, the Guilford College volleyball team (6-15, 2-4 ODAC) fell just short against Randolph Macon (10-7, 3-2 ODAC) on Friday night in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Randolph-Macon held the advantage offensively, recording 62 kills and a .285 hitting percentage compared to Guilford's 43 kills and .205 mark. The Yellow Jackets also led in service aces (11-4), blocks (8-1) and assists (45-26), while both teams finished with 51 digs. 

Olivia Roberts (Claremont, Calif.) led Guilford with 11 kills, while Chrisbel Alcántara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) also contributed 11 kills. Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) recorded 18 assists and 15 digs, while Karly Peacock (Honolulu, Hawaii) added one service ace and five assists.

Randolph-Macon finished with 62 kills, a .285 hitting percentage, 51 digs and eight blocks. Allison Lach led the Yellow Jackets with 14 kills and 10 digs.

The Quakers dropped the opening set, 25-14, before responding with wins in the second and third sets, 25-19 and 25-21, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set to even the match at 2-2. Randolph-Macon then edged Guilford, 19-17, in the deciding fifth set to secure a 3-2 match victory.

The match featured numerous ties and lead changes as both teams battled throughout the five sets. The Quakers recorded 43 kills and hit .205 overall. Guilford's strongest offensive performance came in the second set, when the team recorded 11 kills with one error for a .370 hitting percentage. The Quakers added 10 kills in the third set, nine in the fourth and 10 in the fifth.

Despite the five-set loss, the Quakers showed resilience after dropping the opening set, winning back-to-back sets to take a 2-1 lead. Guilford continued to compete down the stretch, pushing the deciding set to 19-17 before Randolph-Macon secured the match. The Quakers will look to build on their competitive effort as they continue ODAC play.

Guilford will return to action Saturday, October 10, when the Quakers travel to face Batten University at 11 a.m.
