Men’s Soccer Finds Four Goals in Road Game Over Averett

Guilford defeats Averett for the first time since 2022

DANVILLE, Va. - The Guilford College men's soccer team (4-8-4, 3-2-2 ODAC) earned a 4-2 road victory over Averett University (0-12, 0-7 ODAC) on Wednesday evening at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Quakers built a four-goal advantage before the Cougars scored twice in the second half, securing Guilford's fourth win of the season.

Guilford Controlled much of the offensive action, outshooting Averett 25-11, 12-5 on goal. Both teams finished with four corner kicks, while the Quakers committed eight fouls to Averett's six. In goal, Xavier Porter (Belmont, N.C.) played all 90 minutes and made three saves for Guilford. Averett goalkeeper Nicholas Dinoia recorded eight saves despite allowing four goals.

Sebastian Urgiles (Burlington, N.C.) led Guilford offensively with four shots, including three on goal, and scored the opening goal. Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) recorded three shots and a goal, while Jose Melbert (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) contributed two shots and a goal. Matthew Parker (Raleigh, N.C.) also tallied three shots. Cruz Fernandez Madero (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.), and Manuel Huelves Diaz (Madrid, Spain) each recorded an assist in the victory.

For Averett, Marek Hanscom paced the Cougars with three shots, including one on target. Patrick Leslie and Bailey Frye each added two shots, while Joshua Garcia and Michael Milligan scored the team's goals. In goal, Nicholas Dinoia made eight saves across 90 minutes. Guilford goalkeeper Xavier Porter finished with three saves.

The Quakers opened scoring in the 19th minute when a pass up the sideline led to Fernandez Madero for a cross to Urgiles who found the low right corner of the net.

Guilford doubled its advantage in the 32nd minute as Jaykob Garbia received a second-chance cross from Vasquez, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season, and second Quakers goal of the game.

The Quakers carried a 2-0 lead into halftime and wasted little time adding to it after the break. Just under two minutes into the second half, Melbert took a touch in front of the Averett goalkeeper off a pass from Huelves Diaz to find the third goal of the game.

Guilford added another goal in the 54th minute when Hercules sent a shot from deep over the reach of the Averett goalkeeper for the fourth and final Quakers goal of the game.

Averett responded in the 63rd minute with a penalty-kick goal from Joshua Garcia before Michael Milligan added another tally in the 69th minute. Despite the Cougars' second-half push, Guilford maintained its lead through the final whistle to claim the 4-2 victory.

The Quakers return to action on Saturday, October 24, hosting Washington and Lee University for Senior Day at Armfield Athletic Center. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
